Why this field?
Over 1 billion people live disabled everyday, yet adaptive design in a nascent field which effects us all. The built and designed environment is conventionally inadequate for the breadth of human experience. Very few people decide how the built environment is designed. Time to imagine and construct a more equitable society.
There are many challenges faced by our friends and family. These are within the scope and scale for anyone to participate in the design and manufacturing process to solve these problems. We exist to bring collective experiential knowledge into the built world.
Our mission
MakeGood believes in design for all—everyone deserves to be able to carry out daily activities of living with dignity. Utilizing digital design and fabrication tools, we empower those in our community to be curious about the built environment, and make it better for everyone.
Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs)
What is a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD)?
A Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) is a direct transfer of funds from an Individual Retirement Account (IRA), payable directly to a qualified charity. This giving method is available to IRA owners who are 70½ years of age or older, and it offers several key tax advantages.
Key Benefits of QCDs for Your Clients:
1. Satisfy Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs):
Once clients reach age 73 (previously 72), they must start taking Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) from their traditional IRAs, which are then taxed as ordinary income. A QCD can be used to satisfy part or all of the RMD requirement for the year, up to a limit of $100,000 annually. By using a QCD, your clients can reduce their taxable income, potentially lowering their overall tax burden.
2. Tax-Advantaged Giving:
The amount donated via a QCD is excluded from taxable income. This is particularly beneficial for clients who do not itemize deductions on their tax returns. Since QCDs lower adjusted gross income (AGI), they can also have a positive impact on other tax calculations, such as the taxation of Social Security benefits and the threshold for Medicare premium surcharges.
3. Preserve Charitable Deduction Limits:
For clients who are charitable but have already reached the maximum deduction limit for charitable contributions (typically 60% of AGI for cash donations), a QCD provides an alternative way to give without impacting their AGI.
4. Strategic Philanthropy:
QCDs allow your clients to support causes they are passionate about in a tax-efficient manner. It’s an excellent strategy for clients who have more income than they need and wish to make a meaningful difference while minimizing their tax liability.
Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs)
Why This Matters for Your Clients
The QCD is an invaluable tool for your clients who are looking to manage their income in retirement while also fulfilling their philanthropic goals. It’s particularly beneficial for those in higher tax brackets, those who don’t need their RMDs for living expenses, and those who are philanthropically inclined but face limitations on their charitable deductions.
By incorporating QCDs into their financial plans, you can offer your clients a way to achieve greater tax efficiency and leave a lasting impact through their charitable contributions.
How to Implement a QCD
1. The client instructs their IRA custodian to make a direct transfer of funds to the chosen charity.
2. The transfer must be made directly to the charity to qualify as a QCD; funds distributed to the IRA owner first and then donated will not qualify.
3. Ensure that the donation is documented, and that the charity provides an acknowledgment of the donation, which is necessary for tax reporting.
It’s important to advise your clients that they will need to ensure that the charity receiving the QCD is a qualified 501(c)(3) organization, and that QCDs cannot be made to donor-advised funds, private foundations, or supporting organizations.
Next Steps
We encourage you to discuss the potential benefits of QCDs with your clients who are in or nearing the RMD age and to consider choosing MakeGood as the recipient. This tax-efficient giving strategy not only enhances their philanthropic impact but also offers significant financial benefits that can complement their overall financial plan.
